In 2016, less than 6% of new children’s books were published of black, latino and native authors. In learning about this chasm, Leslie has stepped up to produce a book with
hopes to honor her heritage and preserve the Tagalog language. “I believe representation matters and I’m avidly creating books inspired by my minority group of Filipino and Filipino-American culture while celebrating diversity in community.”
Los Angeles Artist, Melissa Leslie is at the core a fine artist in mediums such as painting, photography and design. Her recent work reaches beyond the canvas translating her passion for matters of the heart such as identity and unity with core family values through writing and illustration.
Her latest children’s book is geared towards babies eighteen months and older focusing on Tagalog and English words. Seeing characters that look like the
children reading it is empowering to everyone in the Filipino American household. It is a beautiful way for families to connect and share with friends who hope to create a diverse library or even introduction of being bilingual.
If you enjoy books that explore multiculturalism, unity, family, identity, love, faith, hope, adventure, heritage, language and community we invite you to empower little ones by supporting Melissa Leslie-Quinones in creating timeless books that enrich cultural diversity in children’s literature. You can do this by promoting this book release and sharing her content with images and links! #MLQBooks
